Maths Years 3 to 6
Maths topics, explained
Each page takes one objective of the national curriculum: what it is, a worked example, four questions to try and the mistakes children often make with it. These are the topics where Remelia names the most different mistakes.
Year 3
- Place value in 3-digit numbersRecognise the place value of each digit in a 3-digit number (100s, 10s, 1s)
- Column addition and subtractionAdd and subtract numbers up to 3 digits using formal columnar methods
- Equivalent fractionsRecognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators
- Adding and subtracting fractionsAdd and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole
Year 4
- Dividing by 10 and 100Find the effect of dividing a 1- or 2-digit number by 10 and 100; identify ones, tenths, hundredths
- Converting units of measureConvert between different units of measure (km→m; hour→minute)
- Fractions of amountsSolve problems with harder fractions to calculate and to divide quantities, including non-unit fractions where the answer is a whole number
- Adding and subtracting fractionsAdd and subtract fractions with the same denominator
- Column addition and subtractionAdd and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using formal columnar methods
- Families of equivalent fractionsRecognise and show, using diagrams, families of common equivalent fractions
- Tenths and hundredths as decimalsRecognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths
Year 5
- Converting metric unitsConvert between different units of metric measure (km/m; cm/m; cm/mm; g/kg; l/ml)
- Place value to a millionRead, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000; determine the value of each digit
- Column addition and subtraction with large numbersAdd and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including formal columnar methods
- Equivalent fractionsIdentify, name and write equivalent fractions, including tenths and hundredths
- Mixed numbers and improper fractionsRecognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert between them
Year 6
- Converting units to 3 decimal placesConvert between standard units of length, mass, volume and time, smaller→larger and larger→smaller, to 3 d.p.
- Place value to ten millionRead, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000; determine the value of each digit
- Decimals multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1,000Identify the value of each digit to 3 d.p.; multiply and divide by 10, 100, 1,000 giving answers to 3 d.p.
- Unit conversion problemsSolve problems involving calculation and conversion of units of measure, using decimals to 3 d.p.
