Bexley Selection Test

The 4 schools share one test: set by Quest Assessments, taken on paper. It tests verbal reasoning, English, reading comprehension, maths and non-verbal reasoning.

Who sits it. Children in Year 6, for a place in Year 7 in September 2027: sat from Wednesday 2 September 2026.

    Grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary questions most days, Years 3 to 5, counted towards the exam.

  • Reading

    From the autumn of Year 5, a weekly reading day: one unseen passage and 9 questions on it, from a bank of 130 passages.

  • The last fortnight

    In the last 14 days before the exam date the plan works to, sessions are shorter and nothing new is introduced. The plan works to September of Year 6; until the schools publish the day for your child’s year, that date is an estimate.

Two non-adaptive paper booklets of about 50 minutes each, sat in one session with a short break; OMR answer sheets, usually five options. Calculator use is not stated.
How places are decided
A standardised score at or above a threshold. Total weighted age-standardised score: 50% verbal, 25% numerical, 25% non-verbal (mean 200). The selective score is set each year by the Council with the four grammar schools (about 35% of candidates deemed selective). The top 180 scorers get high priority at their preferred Bexley grammar; others are ranked mainly by distance. A Headteacher Review (Independent Review Panel) can change decisions in exceptional circumstances. If places remain, children one then two marks below the selective score are considered. Source
