The exam

What the schools say.

Each line links to the page it comes from.

Who sets it
SEAG (Northern Ireland transfer test). Source
How it is taken
On paper. Source Source
Sat in person at one of the 63 member schools (Assessment Centres) on a paper answer sheet.
What it tests
English, maths, reading comprehension and spelling, punctuation and grammar. Source
The papers
Paper 1, 60 minutes, multiple choice and written answers; Paper 2, 60 minutes, multiple choice and written answers. Source
How places are decided
Places offered in score order. No pass mark. SEAG reports an English SAS, a maths SAS, their sum (TSAS), a Band 1–6 (Band 1 = cohort percentile 60+) and a cohort percentile. Each school sets its own criteria: most rank by TSAS, Catholic grammars mostly admit in Band order with non-academic sub-criteria inside a band; some admit only a share of places by the test. Source
Practice and familiarisation
Sample papers. The practice materials (another website) Source
Interview
No. Source
No interview is part of the SEAG assessment; entry is by the outcomes plus each school’s published criteria.
What has changed
SEAG’s single common test replaced the two separate transfer tests (AQE’s CEA test and the PPTC/GL test, sat on four consecutive Saturdays) from the November 2023 sitting, for September 2024 entry, within the last three years. Since then: two Saturday papers in November, outcomes as Band + TSAS. Source Source
