Westminster Under School 11+ entry (secures a place at Westminster School at 13)

Westminster School’s 11+ entrance test is built on the ISEB Common Pre-Test, taken online and on paper. It tests English, maths, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, reading comprehension and a piece of writing.

Who sits it. Children in Year 6, for a place in Year 7 in September 2027: sat in November 2026.

    The Key Stage 2 objectives for Years 3 to 6, in the order your child’s school teaches them, counted towards the exam.

    Grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary questions most days, Years 3 to 6, counted towards the exam.

  • Reading

    From the autumn of Year 5, a weekly reading day: one unseen passage and 9 questions on it, from a bank of 130 passages.

  • The writing In part

    Short timed pieces that a grown-up marks at home with ticks: one a fortnight from the spring of Year 4, one a week from the autumn of Year 5. They practise part of what the exam’s writing asks; they are not its paper, and they are not counted towards the exam.

  • The last fortnight

    In the last 14 days before the exam date the plan works to, sessions are shorter and nothing new is introduced. The plan works to November of Year 6; until the school publishes the day for your child’s year, that date is an estimate.

    The page’s words

    “In November of Year 6 , all children who have applied for 11+ entry by the September deadline are invited to sit an online entrance assessments at the School in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The assessments, used by many senior schools, are set by the ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) and are called the Common Pre-Tests.”

    “They will be invited back to the School in January to take additional written papers in Mathematics and English; these papers can only be taken at Westminster Under School. ... Based on the results of the written papers, in February, the School invites back selected children for an interview with two senior members of staff”

    “The first step in the 11+ entry process is for a parent to register their child online from 1 September two years before their intended year of entry ; registration for that year will close on 30 September of the following year . ... Each year, approximately 40 boys and girls join Westminster Under School at 11+.”
